ABOUT YOGA
WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga is a Sanskrit term that means union or joining. The physical practices of yoga were developed in India more than 6,000 years ago, and are designed to facilitate concentration and meditation by quieting the body and mind. All of the classes at the Glowing Body reflect some tradition in hatha yoga.
WHY DO PEOPLE PRACTICE YOGA?
Yoga offers many benefits- whether physical, mental or spiritual. Yoga can mean a lot of things to different people. Yoga can be:
a great physical fitness program, enhancing flexibility, strength and balance
a way to improve breathing and learn relaxation
a path of meditation
a philosophy of life
a chance to explore movement and new ideas
IS YOGA A RELIGION?
Yoga is not a religion; however, it is a philosophical system that has spiritual intentions. Some of the key philosophical principles of yoga include being compassionate towards all living beings (including yourself), being committed to truthfulness, cultivating self knowledge, and practicing acceptance of your current experience. The practice of yoga can support you in becoming closer to your own spiritual beliefs, whatever they are.
