Ahimsa Jujitsu Basics Demo Class with Edward Black
July 5, 2016 @ 7:45 pm - 9:00 pm
Learn about the yoga-martial arts fusion, Ahimsa Jujitsu, and how it is practiced during this FREE demo class.
Edward will be teaching the demo as an introduction to his upcoming 6-week series, Ahimsa Jujisu Basics. Participants will be taught the basic philosophy and techniques of Ahimsa Jujitsu. Each class in the series will begin with yoga-based breath and warm-up exercises, then moves to a series of yoga asanas specifically designed to complement the jujitsu movements that will be taught in that particular class. All jujitsu techniques will take place on padded mats provided by the instructor.
This class is completely safe, controlled, and technique-oriented, but will be more realistic than any type of self-defense techniques most have experienced. Statistics show that over 80% of assaults end up with both the attacker and the assailant on the ground, with the aggressor trying to maintain a dominant position over the victim. Most people, including the attacker, have no idea what to do when the attack moves to the ground. A knowledgeable person can take advantage of this to achieve an advantageous position over the attacker. Once this position is established, a number of neutralizing defenses can be employed.
Because of the close physical contact in the jujitsu portion of the class, some attendees may feel more comfortable taking the class with a training partner they know. While all are welcome, please be aware that if you intend to participate as an individual there is partner work where you may be paired with someone you do not know, male or female. If anyone is ever uncomfortable practicing the techniques with other individuals, the instructor will always have alternative methods available.
There is no prerequisite or pr-registration for this demo class as it is a free drop-in class. Participation in the subsequent series is not required to attend.
About Edward:
Edward has studied the martial arts for over 40 years and has earned multiple black belts in karate and jujitsu. He has trained with both Royce and Rener Gracie, whose family created Brazilian Jujitsu in the early 1900’s. Edward has had a home-based yoga practice for over 10 years, and completed his 200-hour Glowing Body Teacher Training under Cindy Dollar in May 2016. The teacher training inspired him to create a yoga-martial arts fusion he has named “Ahimsa Jujitsu.” This completely unique approach incorporates physical and philosophical elements of yoga such as asana (poses), pranayama (breath control), and ahimsa (non-harm, to self and others) into an effective but non-violent self-defense system.
Edward holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee, and has written a book on martial arts philosophy, “Wisdom of the Mystic Mountain Warrior.”
