Breath as Meditation with Jen Schappel
September 22, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
“By looking at how we breathe, we begin to understand something about who we are.”
-Richard Rosen
We breathe all day everyday (hopefully). For many of us, however, this involuntary process has become dysfunctional. By paying attention to the way we breathe and learning the anatomy of breathing, we can become more efficient respirators. The breath is closely tied to the nervous system; by shaping the breath we can influence our mental state, energy, and stress levels. Sustained focus on the breath becomes a practice of meditation and can anchor our mind in the present moment.
Through guided, reclined breathing exercises and the use of props, we will seek to observe and acquaint ourselves with our everyday body and breath. Class will also include time for lecture and discussion, as participants are strongly encouraged to share their experience.
Specific pranayama practices will not be taught in this series, although the exercises presented can serve as a solid first step toward regular pranayama practice.
This 4-week series is progressive in nature so drop-ins will not be accepted after the first week.
