Building Mindfulness: Meditation for Beginners with John Blackburn
September 3, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Establish roots in simple yet powerful meditation practices under the guidance of an expert teacher.
Mindfulness is the acceptance of our experience without judgment. In the absence of judgment, we can see ourselves, others, and experiences more clearly. As a result, we can find well-being in our daily life. From a position of greater mindfulness, we can build compassion for ourselves and others.
John has designed this course for beginners but anyone wanting to refresh their understanding is welcome. Each class combines lecture, discussion, as well as time for practice and questions. Although these meditation practices come from Buddhist traditions, they are secular in nature so this course is appropriate for people of any, or no, spiritual tradition.
John will provide suggested reading material prior to the start of the series. Please register early so you have time to review this material.
Class is limited to 15 students.
Drop-ins will not be accepted after the first class.
Class will meet on Wednesdays, September 3rd, 10th, 24th and October 1st from
6:00pm – 7:30pm.
John Blackburn, Ph.D., has been practicing meditation for over forty years. He has studied with teachers in several traditions including Zen and Vipassana (Insight). He is Chairman of the Board of the Southern Dharma Retreat Center in Spring City, NC. John leads a local sitting group at the Knoxville Community of Mindfulness. He also serves as a hospice volunteer.
*Please note: Class will not meet September 17th as John will be on retreat.
